Evangelism: Are we doing our part?

I recently read the following story in the Evidence Bible:

John Wesley was asked what he would do with his life if he knew that he would die at mid-night the next day. His answer was something like this: "I would just carry on with what I am doing. I will arise at 5:00 a.m. for prayer, then take a house meeting at 6:00 a.m. At 12 noon, I will be preaching at an open-air. At 3:00 p.m. I have another meeting in another town. At 6:00 p.m. I have a house meeting; at 10:00 p.m. I have a prayer meeting and at 12:00 midnight, I would go to be with my Lord."

If we knew we were to die at 12 o'clock tomorrow night, would we have to step up our evangelistic efforts, or could we in all good conscience carry on just as we are?

I enjoy doing my devotional studies using the Evidence Bible. If you haven't seen one, ask for it at your local book store. It is a wonderful tool for any Christian.

Today's View from Peru: Ice Cream

Here is a familiar scene across from our church-the ice cream man! This fellow works every day selling ice cream to the children around the neighborhood. Soon the weather will change and the temperature will start to drop a little. Then during the winter the only ones eating ice cream are the Americans!

These three fellows enjoy a cone before heading into the church for Bible club.

Today's View from Peru: The Climb

We enjoy living on the top floor of a three story apartment building. We enjoy the good views, the fresh breezes, and the added touch of security. Many of our visitors notice that we are in good shape when we make it to the stop of the stairs quickly. But our apartment isn't the only place where we constantly climb stairs. Vina Alta, where we are starting our new church, is perched on the edge of a steep mountain ridge. The homes are literally built right into the rocky slope. Most of the homes are only accessible by foot and by using many, many stairs!

I couldn't figure out why my legs were so sore after our visitation days. Then I began to realize that we spent many hours climbing steps and standing on a steep slant while talking to people. I guess we have the blessing of exercise as we visit door-to-door. It is a pleasure to climb steps searching for souls that need to hear the good news of Jesus Christ.

Here is the street about a block from our church.

Still have a long way to go...keep climbing!

Pictures don't really show how steep this climb really is!

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...

You may have noticed in other pictures that most of the walls in our rented location are covered with mirrors. This was done years ago when it was a restaurant to make it appear larger and brighter. The only problem is that all of the mirrors are distracting during a church service. It is easy to look into the faces of those seated nearby. It is also strange to see yourself a dozen times in the many reflections around the room. We recently found some special contact paper that is designed for window privacy. We carefully cut and placed the plastic sheets , even managing to use a creative style. The ends include the shape of a cross. It was certainly nice to have a new look at the front of the church.

We have jokingly said that our church should be called "Vanity Baptist Church" because of all the mirrors! It is amazing how creative and flexible you can become on the mission field! Thanks to my parents who were visiting for their help in this little project.

PoeKids Update!

We just noticed that it has been a long time since we updated the girls website. That doesn't mean we've stopped taking pictures! The girls are both growing and doing well. Visit their blog to see what they've been busy doing lately.
